French luxury house Maison Margiela teams up with Reebok for these fantastic Club C Shoes releasing tomorrow. Club C shoes have been iconic since the mid-80s.
So you’d think we’d have seen everything that can be done with the tennis shoe model. Not if Maison Margiela has anything to say about it.
The entire upper is given what’s called the “trompe-l’oeil” effect. Basically creating a visual illusion with Vector Red, White and Black, we think we see panels, threading, and debossing on what is actually a smooth upper.
That’s right, the entire upper is a single piece of flat Vector Red leather, topped with a toe wrap, lace cage, and heel counter.
Mimicking the 3D surface of the OG silhouette, a 2D optical illusion forces the viewer to shadows, curves, and depth that isn’t there. And it does so quite flawlessly, with the vibrant laces, fuzzy textile lining, and thick rubber outsole helping to sell the trick.
Finally, Maison’s numerical logo and trompe-l’oeil house code top the tongue tab complete the trippy design.
