adidas unvails the next wave in sustainable sneakers with the upcoming Stan Smith Mylo using a new mushroom-based material. You read correctly, the Three Stripes brand ups the anty in the recyclable shoe industry by introducing mycelium.
Now adidas is no stranger to resued material, utilizing Primegreen materials and working with Cyrill Gutsch and Parley for the Ocean. However, the implementation of the undergrown roots of mushrooms as a replacement for leather with the help of biotech company Bolt Threads is a game-changer.
“The Introduction of Mylo as a new material is a major step forward in our bold ambition to help end plastic waste.” – Amy Jones Vaterlaus, Global Head of Future at adidas.
The Regenerative Loop creation process used to create this material means truly working with nature. The process involves growing the mycelium with a cutting-edge verticle agriculture technique in less than two weeks. The result: a Stan Smith silhouette “designed in synergy with earth’s ecosystems.”
Arriving in an Off-White color, the outer upper, perforated Three Stripes, heel tab, and branding come completely comprised from mycelium roots. Meanwhile, the bright Brown-colored midsole and the connecting outsole are made from natural rubber.
